Based on real-life shipwreck of the David Brown, which sailed from San Francisco on October 11 1861, bound for Liverpool. Contemporary accounts record that 20 of the crew were rescued by the Sea Wane under a Captain Wallace but that the Captain, the rest of the crew, and all the passengers were lost at sea.
